The score for Serenade for Alison was published in the third issue of Décollage, a series of publications created by the German artist Wolf Vostell.Knowles performed Paik’s piece at an event titled Parallel Performances of New Music, a follow-up to the Fluxus Internationale Festspiele Neuester Musik organised by Vostell at the Galerie Monet in Amsterdam on 5 October 1962. Knowles interpreted the score freely and added some personal elements.
